• Islam conversion reduced Christian communities in North Africa

• In Egypt, Coptic religion was the majority and tolerated by Muslim rulers

• Ethiopian Christianity developed some of its most distinctive features 

• One was a fascination with Judaism and Jerusalem

• Byzantine empire played a key role in the trade throughout Eurasia. 

• The Islamic expansion reduced the size of the Byzantine state
